It was both a symbolic and emotional ceremony as Dr. Andy Hakin was officially installed as St. FX University’s 19th President and Vice Chancellor. A formal ceremony was held in the Bloomfield
Centre’s MacKay Room prior to the Fall Convocation, led by a member of the St. FX Board of Governors, Tom Langley and Antigonish Bishop Wayne Kirkpatrick, the Vicar of the Founder.
In his speech following his installation, Hakin offered some hints on the future direction of St. FX, saying it has already started to map out its future with intentionality and purpose.
Hakin was deeply moved after being presented with two gifts by the University’s Knowledge Keeper, Kerry Prosper from his home community of Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation including a Star Blanket. In his previous role as Provost and Academic Vice-President at the University of Lethbridge, the Blackfoot people, in a special ceremony in 2017 at Homecoming, gave Hakin a name, which means “Herding the Buffalo”. It was in recognition of Hakin’s work as a champion of diversity and inclusion.
