During talks about water and sewer upgrades for the Antigonish Arena and Exhibition grounds
at last night’s Antigonish Town Council meeting, the topic of sole sourcing for the new Antigonish Farmer’s market building came up.
Antigonish Mayor Laurie Boucher explained the board of the Antigonish Farmers Market decided to go with a contractor for the construction of the new market building without going to tender.
Boucher said the Farmer’s Market has the full support of council and doesn’t regret the funding offered by the town. With that said, Boucher said it’s important to note if the building was a town project, tenders would have been necessary. The town and county met with the market board, and Boucher said both councils explained their concerns. She also said this is something the town will review going forward.
The mayor said she and County Warden Owen McCarron, along with other staff and councillors, received calls from residents with concerns, which Boucher called legitimate.
