Richmond Municipal Council approved a $5,000 grant for a local legion to accommodate an emergency shelter.
During last night’s regular monthly meeting in Arichat, council agreed to take $1,000 from the District 1 Fund, $1,000 from the District 2 Fund, and $3,000 from the Regional Grant Fund to make Royal Canadian Legion Branch 150 in Arichat accessible during an emergency.
Although they agreed it’s a worthy project, District 3 Councillor Brian Marchand and District 4 Councillor Amanda Mombourquette said there is a need to get the financial information from organizations, like how money is at their disposal, before they approve such funding.
Mombourquette also said the municipality needs to get a tally of the needs of all emergency shelters and comfort centres in Richmond County.
Warden Lois Landry added that council needs to know the requirements for groups overseeing emergency shelters.
