Victoria County District RCMP say the search for an 80-year-old Baddeck man has been suspended. The search for Richard Mahoney ended on Sunday evening. However, RCMP say they will continue to collect new information and leads and the search may be reactivated if further details become available.
Ten Ground Search and Rescue Teams from Cape Breton, Cheticamp, Colchester, Pictou, Sheet Harbour, Strait, East Hants, Eastern Shore, Inverness and Springhill covered an extensive search near where Mahoney was last seen and areas around Baddeck and Sydney. Aerial searches were also conducted using helicopters from the Natural Resources and Renewables Department and drones from the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association. The search has involved some 2,000 volunteer hours covering more than 100 kilometres of forest, trails, shorelines and roads.
Mahoney was last seen on July 18th on Jessica Wong Lane in Baddeck. Mahoney is described as 5-foot-8, and weighs 140 pounds . He has grey hair and blue eyes, and a dark bruise on his right elbow. He may be wearing dark coloured shorts, a white and blue plaid or checkered shirt with moccasin style shoes.
