LOCAL SPORTS
AUS: The X-Men Football team remain undefeated, following a dominant Homecoming game win, 52-7 over the Mount Allison Mounties. X-Men quarterback and U SPORTS offensive player of the week Silas Fagnan went 18-30 for 301 yards in the air with four touchdowns, and 25 yards on the ground, while running back Malcolm Bussey gained 157 yards on the ground with 22 carries and two touchdowns. Zachary Houde earned St. FX player of the game honours with five receptions for 161 yards and a touchdown. The X-Men, who have clinched first place, will be on a bye weekend, while the Mounties host Saint Mary’s Saturday afternoon. St. FX are back in action on October 27th when they travel to Halifax to take on SMU.
In Hockey, Michael Petizian scored the overtime winner to help lead the UNB REDS to a 5-4 overtime victory over the X-Men in Fredericton. It’s the REDS’ fourth win of the season, while the X-Men are in the middle of the pack with a record of 1-2-1-0. Next up for the X-Men is a match in Halifax Wednesday night versus Dalhousie.
At the UBC Okanagan Fall Classic, the X-Men Basketball squad are 1-1 after a 90-66 loss to Ottawa. The team wraps up the tournament against the host UBC team at 5 pm Atlantic time.
In Soccer, Memorial visits St. FX Stadium for a pair of afternoon matches: the Women play at 1pm, followed by the Men at 3:15.
NS Junior: The Antigonish Bulldogs got the win in Membertou, defeating the Junior Miners 4-3. Three games on tap today: the Strait Pirates host the Lumberjacks at 3:30 at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre, while at the Wellness Centre, the Pictou County Scotians face the Sackville Blazers, also at 3:30. Tonight at the Antigonish Arena, the Bulldogs host the Valley Maple Leafs. Puck drops at 7:30.
U15: The Novas thumped the TASA Gulls 6-2 at the Antigonish Arena, while in Cole Harbour the WearWell Bombers defeated the Harbour Rage 4-1. The Bombers are back home with a match against the Wildcats at 11:30 this morning at the Wellness Centre, while the Novas host the Wolverines at 12:30 at the Antigonish Arena.
U16 AAA: The Cabot Highlanders continue their PEI road trip with a game against the Western Rebels at Noon.
U18: The Pictou Weeks Majors defeated the Mustangs 3-1 in Lunenburg.
Maritime Major Female: The Northern Subway Selects picked up win number nine, a 2-1 victory over the Greenfoot Capitals. The Selects against play host at the Hector Arena in Pictou, this time against the Western Wind at Noon.

Auston Matthews registered his second straight hat trick to start the N-H-L schedule as the Maple Leafs thumped the Minnesota Wild 7-4. Toronto’s star centre is healthy after dealing with some nagging injuries last season but appears to be back to his M-V-P-calibre self. Matthews is the fifth player in N-H-L history to open a season with consecutive hat tricks, joining Alex Ovechkin in 2017-18 and a trio of players from the 1917-18 campaign.
The Vancouver Canucks won their second game in as many N-H-L regular-season outings by defeating the Oilers 4-3 in Edmonton. Nils Hoglander, Andrei Kuzmenjo, Sam Lafferty and Jack Studnicka scored for the Canucks. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid scored for the Oilers.
In Montreal, the Canadiens got goals from Sean Monahan, Cole Caufield and Tanner Pearson to beat the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 3-2. Tyler Johnson scored both Chicago goals. Connor Bedard had an assist for Chicago.
The Calgary Flames suffered their first loss of the season, dropping a 5-2 decision to the Penguins in Pittsburgh. Bryan Rust scored twice for the Pens. Matt Coronato and Jonathan Huberdeau scored for the 1-and-1 Flames. Earlier, the Ottawa Senators flattened the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2, while the Winnipeg Jets edged the Florida Panthers 6-4.
Several Canadian golfers will be in the hunt at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas heading into Sunday’s final round. Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B-C, shot 8-under 63 on Saturday to move into a tie for the lead at 15 under with South Korea’s Tom Kim and Californian Lanto Griffin. Taylor Pendrith of Thornhill, Ontario is a shot back of the leaders. Adam Svensson of Surrey, B-C, is two shots off the pace. Abbotsford’s Nick Taylor is three shots back.
Chad Kelly’s third-quarter T-D pass and two-point convert rallied the Toronto Argonauts to a 40-27 C-F-L home win over the Ottawa Redblacks on Saturday. The Argos improved to a league-best 14-and-2. Meanwhile, a 125-yard touchdown return from James Letcher Junior highlighted a second-quarter scoring explosion from the visiting Montreal Alouettes in a 35-21 win over the Edmonton Elks Saturday.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed the world’s most populous nation will bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the International Olympic Committee session in Mumbai today, Modi said hosting the event is “the age-old dream” for India. Ahmedabad, which boasts the largest stadium in the world, would be a likely contender as the main host city for the country’s bid.
