St. FX X-Women Rugby Head Coach Mike Cavanagh has been named AUS Coach of the Year. The

winner of the major awards and conference all-stars in women’s rugby were announced yesterday.

This is the 12th time in Cavanagh’s 21 year career at St. FX that he has been chosed AUS Coach of the Year in Women’s Rugby. He’s also been named CIS, now U Sports, Coach of the Year twice, in 2012 and 2001. This year, Cavanagh guided his X-Women to a perfect 6-and-0 record and their 17th first place finish since the 2002 season. His X-Women allowed the fewest points against in six regular games season games with 43.

Five of Cavanagh’s players were named AUS all-stars including Prop Sam Lake, Lock and Antigonish native Sarah McCarron, Flanker Alexandra Hamilton, Scrum Half Madison Ross and Center Sarah Hoerig.

The X-Women will face Acadia in the AUS final at St. FX Stadium tomorrow at 2 p.m. Both teams have qualified for the 2019 U Sports Women’s Rugby Championship next week at the University of Ottawa. St. FX is the defending national champion.
